Cultures and People of The World Essay - 695 Words

The people of the world speak approximately 250 different languages across countries; they dress in different ways and eat different foods. Societies share basic institutions such as government, the educational system and religious institutions. Therefore, culture is a learned system of shared beliefs and habits of doing activities that guide a person`s daily behavior. In this essay, I will be comparing the cultural dimensions of Japanese culture with that of the culture of my country, India. I will be comparing the four cultural dimensions of the Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long-Term Orientation (LTO)/Short-Term Orientation (STO) and Masculinity/ Femininity between these countries. ï‚ § Power Distance Index(PDI) This dimension†¦show more content†¦Indians adjust and they do not feel uncomfortable or the need to take actions when uncertainty occurs. Japan scores 92, as it is the highest uncertainty avoiding country. Japan is always threatened by natural disasters; hence they learned to prepare themselves against unexpected situations. They follow strict laws and procedures and have a strong sense of nationalism. Even in business, managers prefer facts and figures before making decisions. ï‚ § Long-Term Orientation(LTO)/Short-Term Orientation(STO) This dimension relates to the fact that how people need to realize not everything that happens around us can be explained. In societies with LTO, people believe an explanation is not required as it is complicated to understand the intricacy of life. In societies with STO, people have a keen desire to explain everything. India scores 51, in preference towards long term culture. In India, religious and philosophical thoughts are ruled by ‘karma’. They favor religious thoughts because the nations dominate religion; Hinduism is more of a philosophy of ideas, views and mysterious beliefs. Japan scores 88, one of the highest long-term oriented society. They believe in ‘doing the best in one`s lifetime’ and are guided by those virtues.
